Rising film star Miao Pu is active on both the big and small screens. As a
star in the comedic film "Gao Xing", and on two TV series "Peace-Keeping Army
from China" and "Depart at the West Crossing", audiences get to see the actress
play a variety of characters. The young actress is said to be a "born
actor".
Miao Pu was born in Xi'an. Her parents were both performers of Qin Qiang, a
local drama of Shaanxi province. As early as five years old, Miao performed
along side her parents, playing a Qin Qiang drama adapted from Lu Xun's novel
"Blessing". The drama was produced throughout the northwest part of China for
two hundred performances. And Miao never make any mistakes. But little Miao Pu's
stage experience stopped when she was enrolled in school. She became reserved
and not as active as before. Finally, she was enrolled at the Beijing Film
Academy with an acting major. There she blossomed again and found she was
destined to be an actor.
Upon graduation from the Academy, Miao Pu landed some minor roles, such as in
film "Beg You to Praise Me", and the TV series "Song Dynasty Chief Justice". But
her performance was overlooked amid of a galaxy of stars.
Miao Pu's breakthrough came in 2005 when she played in the TV series "The
Fragrance of Flower of Pagoda Tree". In this drama about the life of antique
dealers, Miao Pu played a girl who evolved from an uncomplaining girl working to
support her lazy brother to an independent woman who devoted her self to the
revolution for justice. Her powerful performance won favorable acclaim.
The role also won her some later offers of the same type of role, fighting
her way through a miserable life with a spunky attitude. Such as in "Cherries"
and "Crossing Over".
In the film "Cherries" Miao plays a mentally handicapped woman who is happily
married to a man with infantile paralysis. She adopts an abandoned baby girl as
her own. Working with all amateur actors and actress requires Miao to be also
very natural. She mastered this challenge well, and the film caused a stir at
the Tokyo Film Festival.
The film "Crossover" tells of a love story spanning thirty years, between a
Japanese civilian and a Chinese girl. The two meet in China during wartime, and
are reunited before the founding of the Republic. Miao gave another convincing
portrayal of a woman with a strong character.
Miao plays another strong-minded woman in TV series "Depart at the West
Crossing". In this production, she helps her husband to rescue his business.
After some ordinary performances in typical urban dramas, Miao Pu embraced
her next big breakthrough. The recently released new year drama "Gao Xing"
reveals the actress' comedic talent. She plays a woman who makes a living
collecting trash. In the film, Miao speak lines with her Shaanxi dialect. People
see an actress with mature acting skills and she sings! The role has overcome
the title that had long applied to her -- "a woman in tragedy". Now, she is so
at home in a comedy, and from this successful transformation, audiences can
expect more breakthroughs from this young inspiring actress.
