World turns lights off for one hour

Landmark buildings across the world are taking part in Earth Hour from 8:30
pm to 9:30 pm on Saturday. China has participated for the first time in the
event which aims to support energy-saving efforts and show concerns about
climate change.The lights went out in landmark buildings in nearly 20 Chinese
cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.

The Bird's Nest, the main stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and the
Water Cube, are new supporters of the Earth Hour Action initiated by the World
Wildlife Fund.


More than 3000 cities in nearly 100 countries and regions across the world
are taking part in this year's Earth Hour. The goal is to highlight concerns
about global climate change and encourage energy saving.

Earth Hour was launched in Sydney, Australia in 2007. About 2.2 million
companies and households kept their lights and electric appliances off for one
hour in the city. The electricity saved was enough to power 200-thousand TV sets
simultaneously for one hour.


The Earth Hour campaign swept around the world in 2008 and is being marked
for the first time in China this year. Chinese people are reacting with
enthusiasm.

One Beijing resident said "It's a very good thing. I heard about Earth Hour
several months ago. And since then I have sent messages to many friends of mine
to join this action."


Another Beijing resident said "I have come to the Olympic Park specially for
the exciting moment. I have told my family and relatives to shut off all the
lights for one hour. They are watching stars through telescope at home."
